Family portrait photography – the experience

What to expect

Whether we’re on location here in Melbourne, in your home, or in my studio, I’m going to make you feel as relaxed as possible. Don’t worry, I’m a professional who has been doing family portraits for years. I’ll have every base covered, and all you need to focus on is feeling and looking relaxed and happy! Be confident we’ll capture some fantastic memories.

We’ll have a pre-shoot consultation (which can be done over the phone or in person), where I find out more about your family dynamic. What are the ages of your children? Personalities, likes, dislikes? Every family works differently, and the more I know the better it goes! My children are all opposites; shy, arty, happy-go-lucky and eccentric, and I understand your children have individual strengths that shine.

The Process

You’ll feel more relaxed if you’re prepared for the shoot. Here’s a checklist for how to get ready:

  1. Have you chosen your outfit? If possible, neutral colours work best. Black can be too heavy against skin tones so try a different coloured top. Think about bold prints: are they screaming for attention? Do you feel comfortable in your outfit? Can you move freely? Think about outfits for your family group, and whether they work together.
  2. You can get your hair and make-up done, and plenty of people do, but don’t change yourself too much. I’m trying to capture the real you, and you won’t feel comfortable if it’s unfamiliar.
  3. Bring a change of outfit – sometimes a different shade or top just works.

Try to a good night sleep the night before!

The shoot itself should take about an hour, although that depends what kind of session we’ve agreed upon. Some family shoots take 1-2 hours, depending on location.

You’ll receive a planning guide after your photo session to help you plan in your home where a collection of images could hang. Around a week after the shoot, you’re invited back to my studio for your images presentation on the big screen. You’ll choose your favourites and we can decide how they should be printed, what size and finish. I’ve created custom works for hundreds of family homes, and I’ll create something unique that suits you and your space.

Your Australian-made products arrive in 1-2 weeks, and I’ll personally deliver them to your home. I love seeing where they are intended to be displayed. I can even organise a picture hanger for you. It’s a full service from start to finish. You don’t get that in Kmart!
